About The Legal Executive
A trade publication covering CILEX and the legal executive profession, built on the public register rather than on press releases.
There are 11,603 people on the CILEX registers. They conduct litigation, exercise rights of audience, run conveyancing and probate practices, and in several dozen English towns they are most of the resident legal capacity. The profession is covered far less than the Bar or the solicitors' profession, and the regulator's own register — a search form behind an encrypted query parameter, with no page for any individual and no way to link to anything — makes it hard to cover.
So this publication starts from the register itself: every practitioner, every firm, every town, matched against Companies House and checked against what the wider web does and does not say about them. The analysis is what falls out of that; the data pages are the working.
What we publish
- Analysis — pieces grounded in the register, with the method stated and the caveats in the piece rather than in a footnote.
- Reference pages — a page per firm, town, practice right, practice area, postcode area, county and qualification year, because the register has none. They carry counts, not people: no page here is about an individual.
- Recommendations — where the data supports one.
Who we are
Rose Traviss is editor. The Legal Executive is published by Assize Data Ltd, which is the data controller — see privacy and personal data. Assize Data Ltd also publishes The Assize, which covers the other regulated legal professions in England and Wales.
What we are not
Not affiliated with CILEX or CILEx Regulation, not endorsed by them, and not an official record of anything. Where this site and the register disagree, the register is right and we want to hear about it.
Corrections: here, acted on without argument. Method: here, including what the data cannot tell you.
