The Legal Executive

Reporting on CILEX and the legal executive profession

Privacy and personal data

The Legal Executive publishes counts, not people. There is no page on this site about a named individual, and no file you can download that contains one.

Who is responsible

The data controller is Assize Data Ltd, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 17510115, registered office c/o IWN Accountancy, The Echo Building, 18 Albert Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1BZ. It publishes The Legal Executive under the Assize News masthead. The editor is Rose Traviss.

Any request or complaint about personal data — including a request to object, correct or remove — goes to dataprotection@assizedata.co.uk. That mailbox covers every Assize News title, because the controller is the same for all of them.

What is published

Aggregates drawn from the public CILEX registers: how many people work in a town, hold a practice right, are employed by a given firm, qualified in a given year. 11,603 register entries sit behind those counts and none of them is reproduced. Specifically, this site does not publish:

  • any person's name, title, or register identifier;
  • a page, profile or biography about any individual;
  • the names in CILEx Regulation's published disciplinary decisions, or the decisions themselves — the 58 of them are counted by sanction and linked at source;
  • the names of approved managers of CILEX-authorised firms;
  • any downloadable file containing a row per person, pseudonymised or otherwise.

Firms are named, because a firm is a business and its regulatory authorisation is a fact about that business. Where a firm's name is also a person's name — a sole practitioner trading under their own name — it appears as the regulator publishes it, as a trading name.

People who hold public office or speak in a public capacity are named in reporting where the record names them: a chief executive quoted from a published board paper, a judge, a named respondent to a consultation. That is reporting on what an organisation did, not publication of a register.

How the counts are made

The full register is processed offline. Every figure on this site is computed there and only the figure is written into the published build, so there is no per-person record in the site's own data files to be scraped, cached or reconstructed. The code that does this is the same code that produces the published datasets, and the switch that would restore person pages is off.

Where the underlying data comes from

The public registers CILEx Regulation and CILEX publish at https://cilexregulation.org.uk/practitioners-directory/, the documents those bodies publish, Companies House, the Legal Aid Agency, and law firms' own websites. Sources and dates are set out on methodology.

Objecting

Because no individual is identified here, there is normally nothing on this site to remove. If you believe something on it identifies you — including through a firm name, or a count small enough to point at one person — write to dataprotection@assizedata.co.uk and it will be taken down while it is looked at, not after. Corrections to anything factual are welcome on the same terms and are published when they are made.

Your rights under UK GDPR, and how to complain to the Information Commissioner, are set out in the controller's privacy notice and data protection page.
